ATHE Level 4 Diploma in Information Security and Assurance
The School of Information Risk Management Information security is widely recognised as an international priority, with hacking, malicious code, and data theft being just three of the many reasons why it's vital in the design, development and implementation of today’s IT systems. This course delivers a view of security threats and solutions, alongside an essential background in wider IT topics. This is particularly important considering the current shortage of related skills in the marketplace. Students will enhance knowledge of a variety of computing disciplines, including analysis and design, programming, networking and information systems. The qualification will focus on the design, configuration, management and support of all types of computer networks, distributed applications based on risk assessments. The Level 4 Diploma in Information Security and Assurance will develop students’ intellectual and practical skills and will promote the development of students’ ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate information security principles in a wide range of appropriate contexts. The two core features of this qualification are: The development of students’ lifelong learning skills including self-evaluation and reflection with the aim of placing students in the best position to make informed decisions about their future professional career The development of decision-making skills. Transferable skills that are necessary for a career in information security are developed through engagement with real life and virtual security issues, enabling the study of key aspects of security and distributed applications. Graduate Courses in Information and Cyber Security
Across the globe, more and more graduates in Information and Cyber Security are needed year after year. This is because new cyber threats emerge at forever increasing speeds! With this rapid increase in the number of graduates required in the field, many new Cyber and IT Security graduate training courses have had to be created. These cater to the educational requirements of employers looking to hire newly qualified IT and Cyber Security specialists.
All organisations that value their data and IT systems will need to consider either hiring new graduates, or training existing staff, so that they can more effectively combat the burgeoning numbers of cyber threats and hacking attempts.
Graduate Degrees evolving with Artificial Intelligence, IoT and Big Data
As the worlds of Big Data and AI (Artificial Intelligence) rapidly evolve, we also expect to see more relevant courses appear regarding their implications too. Machine Learning, Deep Learning and the Internet of Things (IOT) will also become better reflected in the IT and Information Security Courses that are currently on offer.
Finally, in a soon to be future world of sentient robotics as we approach the ‘singularity’ where Artificial Intelligence has been deemed to have matched humans, the management of Cyber Security may not just be down to people alone! Graduating in Cyber Security
Graduates in information security related fields are currently in high demand, working in roles such as Penetration Tester, Security Auditor, Information Security Analyst or leading teams at manager and even director level. For many of these roles, a relevant degree is an essential prerequisite for employers. Degrees may not be taken in IT Cyber or Security a such, many professionals in these fields will also come from a background from the sciences, maths or more general computer science courses.
A good grounding in IT though is generally going to be a must for any graduate in this fast growing field. STEM related courses, i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, are the usually routes to entry for careers in information security.
Roles requiring Cyber Security Degrees
CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) and CTO (Chief Technology Officer) level staff would normally be expected to have a degree and often post degree level qualifications such as PhD and MSc too. It depends upon each organisations specific requirements plus some will expect practical experience dealing with the day to day issues that come as part and parcel of a role in cyber Security.
There are a great many postgraduate training courses available to give specialists in the field a good fundamental grounding of networks, communication protocols, data encryption and data protection too. Practical penetration testing techniques, analysis, audit and reporting skills can also be taught in specialist courses applicable to staff in many different Cyber Security roles.
The UK government has recognised the rise of online crime and industrial espionage by becoming indirectly involved in the certification and accreditation of IT Security professionals. They have tasked GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) daughter organisation NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre) with the role of ensuring that cyber security certifications are approved. They do this via the CHECK scheme for CHECK Team members and CHECK Team Leaders working in Cyber Security.
University Cyber Security Degrees and Post-graduate courses
In the UK, many universities are currently offering degrees in Cyber Security and its related disciplines. These courses include MSc (Masters Degrees) from well-known providers such as De Montford University and the University of Southampton, where a Cyber Security and Risk Management MSc course is available.
Other universities across the country, such as the University of York, Warwick and London Metropolitan University provide similar courses.
These courses are also becoming more popular with Universities in general, including the red brick colleges, offering new degrees in the discipline and in related fields such as Computer Science.
Prior to attending degree level courses, many students may already have obtained qualifications such as the Higher Apprenticeship Cyber Security Technologist Level 4 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland or, in Scotland, the SQA SCQF level 6 Diploma in Information Security or SQA SCQF level 8. The requirements for degree course entry do vary so please check first to see what the individual colleges entrance level requirements are before applying.
New IT Security Courses that are becoming more popular at the moment
Other degrees that are becoming more popular currently include Computer Networking, Cyber Security and Forensics, Cyber Security Engineering and Computer Forensics. Don’t forget the training needs for those working in the soon to be future world of Robotics, AI and even sentient AI either!
We have also seen Crisis and Disaster Management courses incorporating information security coming to the fore in more recent times.
